The Alabama Biomeds is launched!

In the interest of education, networking, information exchange and the good of our patients, the Alabama Biomedical Society was born on February 28, 2008 at a meeting at UAB Hospital.

Based in Birmingham, the Alabama Biomedical Society (and the first chapter of the ABS) is endeavoring to create a state-wide organization, which can have chapters that serve the needs of the biomeds.  (Biomeds is the preferred term to refer to both BMETs, biomedical engineers, clinical engineers, and radiology engineers which work to support medical equipment in hospitals.  Biomeds may work for hospitals, manufacturers, third parties or professional service companies.  We believe that there are lessons to be learned and information to be shared from all of these biomeds.

Logo Contest
- The ABS is in need of a logo.  Every Society must have a logo to out on letterhead, make into a pin, and to embroider on shirts. The ABS is announcing the ABS Logo Contest.  A $100 cash prize (donated by GMI) will be presented to the individual who submits the loge which is selected to be the official logo of the ABS.  Please send all entries to alabamabiomedlogo@plynch.us.  They can be color, black and white, or even a rough sketch.

A central organization to empower the local chapters.

After careful evaluation of the population distribution of Alabama and other biomedical associations in the US, it seems as if the chapter system will work best.  Regular state-wide meetings cannot be held - the distances are too great.  And the obstacles to a local are to start an organization are too great.  So the Alabama Biomeds seeks to become the central organization that can handle the mundane things such as incorporation, tax status, dues collection, finances, etc., leaving the local chapters to meet the educational needs of biomeds.

Where will the chapters be located?

That is up to the biomeds in an area.  Looking at a map, it seems logical to have at least 4.  The Alabama Tourism board has identified 4 regions as:

Gulf Coast (Mobile),
River Heritage (Montgomery),
Metropolitan (Birmingham), and
Mountain (Huntsville).
It might be good to start with these.

For the time being, the time consuming work in being done largely by:

Please email the above address if you wish to be included in the Alabama Biomeds mailing list.  It is through this mailing list which we are developing the name, logo, bylaws, articles of incorporation, and other necessary administrative detail.  All participants are welcome.

This website and all control of the Alabama Biomeds will be turned over to the Board of Directors, as soon as it is elected.
